Guangxi Provincial Art Museum is the “holy land” of China’s theater artists as well as China’s earliest comprehensive social art education institution. It was built in February 1944 and renovated in February 1946. It was led by Ouyang Yuqian, the founder of Chinese drama movement, famous dramatic artist and drama educator. The art museum is China’s only existing drama performance theater dating back to the period of the War of Resistance against Japan. It is known as the first great landmark in the history of Chinese drama.

From Feb 15 to May 19, 1944, famous dramatists Ouyang Yuqian and Tian Han led people of the Chinese United Front against Japanese Aggression and advanced people in cultural circle and all sectors of society to hold the first southwest China drama exhibition. It gathered nearly 1,000 theater representatives and 33 groups from Guangdong, Hunan, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, Fujian, Jiangxi and Hubei provinces. The drama exhibition staged more than 60 plays and 170 performances, attracting 150,000 visitors and more than 10 domestic and overseas media outlets.

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the art museum has been carrying forward the spirit of the southwest China drama exhibition through artistic creation and performance and patriotic publicity. The art museum has always been an important venue for cultural inheritance and promotion in Guilin. In 2019, the former site of the museum was listed in the eighth batch of national key cultural relics.

From 2019 to 2022, the largest and longest renovation to the Guangxi Provincial Art Museum was carried out. On Dec 11, 2022, the opening ceremony of the first Guilin Festival was held at the newly renovated museum. The museum held a series of activities to promote outstanding stage art performances, cultural art salons, cultural performances for the public and drama education. By inheriting the local Guilin operas, it  also put on display Guilin’s drama and culture of the period of the War of Resistance against Japan and built a platform for international cultural promotion and communication.
