Public pays tribute to top surgeon
People bid farewell to the late liver specialist Wu Mengchao, the nation's top hepatobiliary surgeon and academician with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, at the Longhua funeral parlor in Shanghai, May 26, 2021.
Wu Mengchao, who taught roughly 80 percent of the experts and doctors specializing in liver surgeries in the country today, died at age 99 in Shanghai on Saturday.
As the first Chinese doctor to establish a theoretical basis for liver surgery, he was responsible for more than 30 major medical achievements through independent innovation.
Wu, who retired only two years ago, completed more than 16,000 operations throughout his 75-year career.
