Liu Chengyi is a professor and PhD supervisor in sports and human science at South China Normal University and an academic leader supported by the Guangdong Province Universities and Colleges Pearl River Scholar Funded Scheme.

Liu obtained his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Nanjing University, master's degree in chemistry from Jilin University and a doctorate in laser technology from Huazhong University of Science and Technology. 

He was a postdoctoral fellow in biophotonics at South China Normal University and a senior member of the American Society of Lasers and Surgery.

Liu Chengyi has been in charge of five National Natural Science Foundation projects, one Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation team project and one crewed space flight pre-research project. He also participated in one key project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation and one national key research and development project. 

He has been included in a Guangdong provincial talents training project for university and college teachers twice. In 2019, he won the third prize of the Guangdong Provincial Medical Science and Technology Award. Some concepts he put forward have been widely used in the fields of medicine, biology, sports and social sciences.
