Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region has been adopting multiple measures to achieve rapid development in the education sector since the start of the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20), said Liu Youyi, head of the Education Department of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, during a press conference on June 22.

Liu noted that Guangxi has built 1,500 new schools and renovated more than 20,000 schools in recent years, providing educational opportunities for 1.14 million additional students.

The overall kindergarten enrollment rate in Guangxi in 2020 reached 91 percent, while the figure for higher education institutions was 47.9 percent.

All counties, cities and districts in Guangxi passed national inspections on the balanced development of compulsory education this January.

The region provided a total of 26.14 billion yuan ($4.04 billion) in assistance for 16.52 million impoverished students.

Efforts have been made to expand opening-up and cooperation in education sectors, and the region has established cooperation relationships with nearly 200 institutions in ASEAN countries.

Liu said that more than 10,000 overseas students come to Guangxi every year, most of whom are from ASEAN countries, ranking it among the top in China in terms of the number of ASEAN students received.

The region has also been striving to attract high-quality educational resources from developed countries such as the United States, Japan and South Korea.
