1982

Wuzhou was listed as a city to be opened up to the outside world.

1984

Beihai and Fangchenggang were designated by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council as two of the 14 Chinese port cities to further open up to the outside world.

1985

Guangxi's first large export fair was held in Hong Kong from Nov 28 to Dec 11.

1986

The Ministry of Public Security on Jan 30 announced that five cities (Nanning, Guilin, Beihai, Liuzhou and Wuzhou) and seven counties (Binyang, Guiping, Rongxian, Beiliu, Xing'an and Luchuan) would be among the first Chinese regions to open up to the outside world.

The Ministry of Public Security announced on Nov 30 that another two cities and seven counties would be among the Chinese regions to open up to the outside world.

1987

Yulin was approved as a national pilot zone for national rural reform.

1988

Three cities (Wuzhou, Yulin and Qinzhou) and three counties (Cangwu, Hepu and Fangcheng Ge) were included among the Chinese coastal regions to open up to the outside world upon approval from the State Council on March 19.

The Guilin New Technology Industrial Development Zone was established on May 29.

1997

Qinzhou Port officially opened up to the outside world on June 18.

2003

It was decided at the 7th ASEAN-China Summit on Oct 8 that the China-ASEAN Expo and China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit would be held in Guangxi annually starting in 2004.

2004

The first China-ASEAN Expo and China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit were held in Nanning from Nov 3 to 6.

2005

The Nanning-Friendship Pass Expressway, the first expressway connecting China with ASEAN, opened to traffic.

2008

The Qinzhou Free Trade Port Area was established on May 29 upon approval from the State Council.

The Guangxi Pingxiang Comprehensive Bonded Zone was established on Dec 19 upon approval from the State Council.

2011

Guangxi's GDP exceeded 1 trillion yuan ($145.4 billion) for the first time.

2012

The State Council approved the establishment of the China-Malaysia Qinzhou Industrial Park on March 26.

2013

Guangxi became the first autonomous region to become accessible via high speed railway.

2015

The Beihai High-Tech Industrial Development Zone was promoted to national status upon approval from the State Council on March 30.

2016

Naning's metro line 1, the first of its kind in Guangxi, began operating on Dec 28.

2017

Guangxi's GDP exceeded 2 trillion yuan for the first time.

2018

The 12th China International Garden Expo was held in Nanning starting Dec 6.
