Cui Peng

Cui Peng is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), as well as a researcher at the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, CAS. He has long been engaged in research on mudslides and other mountain hazards. In the study of mudslide formation, movement and disaster mechanism, he initially established the theory of geotechnical mudslide initiation, deepened the understanding of mudslide movement resistance, clarified the flow amplification, sand transport and its disaster chain rules, and revealed the disaster mechanism. In the research of disaster mitigation principles and methods, he established the principles and methods of prediction and forecast of debris flow based on the initiation mechanism; proposed the principles and methods of disaster prevention and control of debris flow process; developed the model and technology of debris flow management in mountain roads and scenic areas. He revealed the distribution rules of secondary mountain hazards such as mudslides, landslides and weirs in Wenchuan earthquake area, and proposed the methods of mudslide risk analysis at different spatial scales and the principles of mega mudslide prevention and control.

He has presided over and completed many major research projects, such as the National Distinguished Youth Fund and Key Fund from National Natural Science Foundation, and the 973 Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, etc. He has won Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, Sichuan Provincial Outstanding Innovative Talent Award, and  Outstanding Researcher Award from the World Association for Soil and Water Conservation (WASWC).
