Chen Shiyi
Chen Shiyi, born in October 1956 in Tiantai, Zhejiang province, is an expert in fluid mechanics, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, an academician of the World Academy of Sciences, a tenured chair professor of Peking University and the second president of the Southern University of Science and Technology.
After graduating from the Department of Mechanics at Zhejiang University in 1981, Chen was admitted to the Department of Mechanics at Peking University for graduate studies where he successively received his master's and doctoral degrees. In 1987, he started working for the Los Alamos National Laboratory as a post-doctoral researcher, serving as the director of the Turbulence and Lattice Gas Research Group and the deputy director of the Nonlinear Research Center. Chen was a tenured professor and director of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University from 1999 to 2005, and became the director of the Center for Computational Science and Engineering at Peking University in 2001. He served as the first dean of the School of Engineering at Peking University from 2005 to 2013, dean of the Graduate School from 2011 to 2013, and vice-president and dean of the Graduate School at the university from 2013 to 2015. Chen was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2013. In 2015, he became the second president of the Southern University of Science and Technology. Chen is mainly engaged in turbulence theory and computational fluid mechanics.
