Psilotum nudum, known as the "living fossil from 300 million years ago", was recently spotted in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province.

The identification of this species in Zhoushan has expanded the roster of plant species within the city, marking a significant milestone for the exploration and utilization of plant diversity and resources, according to Gao Haojie, deputy director of the Zhoushan Institute of Forestry Science.

This ancient plant species first emerged during the Devonian period, establishing itself as one of the world's oldest and most primitive vascular plants. It is also recognized as the oldest terrestrial vascular plant and holds a place on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species.

Psilotum nudum is typically found in tropical and subtropical regions, with a presence in various Chinese provinces such as Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, and Guizhou. Thriving in warm, humid, and semi-shaded environments, this plant species commonly grows in rock crevices or on tree trunks.
