Two scenic areas in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, were recently upgraded to 4A-level scenic spots (5A is the highest classification), local media reported on Jan 11.

Located in the northernmost edge of Zhoushan, Huaniao Island is a tranquil area with a charming village.

The views from Huaniao Lighthouse are said to be the best on the island. The lighthouse was built by China Customs in 1870 and is one of the oldest lighthouses in the country.

The 16.5-meter-high, 22,000-square-meter lighthouse is equipped with a radio tower, power house, machine house, warehouse and wharf.

Due to its large size, functionality, and historical and geographical significance, it was dubbed the "No 1 Lighthouse in the Far East". It was also honored by the State Council as a key cultural relic under State protection in 2001.
