Established by a shipbuilding family, the Cen's Shipyard in Zhoushan has been making wooden ships and boats for over a century.
Shipbuilders here have inherited a series of traditional skills which include material selection, ship assembling, as well as decorative carving and painting.
The whole set of techniques have been listed as a state-level intangible cultural heritage of China in 2008. The shipyard runs its business on a made-to-order basis, building most of its ships for the tourism industry. It also operates a dedicated museum to display traditional shipbuilding contents for tourists.
