Shaoxing's Anchang Ancient Town has passed the national 4A-level tourist attraction reassessment, according to local cultural and tourism authorities.
4A refers to the four As in the rating, which recognize excellence in safety, cleanliness, accessibility, and visitor services. The millennium-old town is leveraging its rich history and ongoing innovation to reinforce Shaoxing's cultural and tourism profile.
Anchang has been a commercial hub since the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911). Its old streets, originally opened in 1489, retain well-preserved traditional architecture, while local customs continue to thrive. The town features traditional shopfronts and workshops, overhanging balconies, and stone lanes.
The town emphasizes living heritage. Traditional crafts such as bamboo weaving and shoemaking are preserved, while festive foods like sausages remain a part of daily life. Local performances like water town weddings make the cultural experience more tangible. Since 2000, winter festivities have expanded into seasonal cultural events, immersing tourists in authentic local traditions.
Anchang has been deepening the integration of cultural and tourism. Traditional rituals are refined, while creative activities, including handicraft contests, specialty performances, and cultural markets, bring new energy to the streets. Educational travel programs focus on local history and crafts, from stone carving to sauce brewing, offering immersive experiences that allow young visitors to engage with the town's cultural heritage.
Anchang Ancient Town continues to blend history and innovation, positioning Shaoxing as a dynamic destination for cultural tourism.
