What kind of creativity can a school sports ground offer? Shaoxing University's Hexi campus has set a new standard.
Constructed by the Architectural Design & Research Institute of Zhejiang University, the sports ground is the first of its kind in Shaoxing to showcase a "3D folding" concept.
The architectural marvel was recently among over 4,000 global projects to clinch the Sports Architecture category award at the ArchDaily 2024 Building of the Year Awards, standing out as the sole winning entry crafted by a Chinese design firm.
Standing near the main entrance of Shaoxing University's He Xi campus, this three-story open-air sports arena features a sprawling track and field arena, creating a series of open and semi-open spaces.
The stadium also incorporates traditional arched promenade designs, with ramps connecting each level, making it easy for users to transition between different sports facilities.
The first floor houses badminton, basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts, with an outdoor U-shaped pool for extreme sports like skateboarding. Martial arts studios, gyms, and table tennis rooms are placed throughout the middle level.
"The creative elevated folding design addresses the issue of limited land availability, allowing for more usable space. In total, the stadium spans over 20,000 square meters and can accommodate thousands of people for sports activities," said an authority with Shaoxing University.
The stadium primarily serves as a venue for teaching and training activities for students and faculty. However, it is gradually opening up to the public free of charge and has become a popular destination within the campus. Many locals also use the grounds for their daily exercises.
