The Regulations on Protection and Development of Shaoxing Yellow Wine recently received the green light at a provincial conference and will be implemented on Oct 1.
The regulations will help carry forward Shaoxing's yellow rice wine culture and industry, said a local official in Shaoxing, East China's Zhejiang province.
Shaoxing's yellow rice wine is China's first alcoholic geographical indication product and is an important piece of historical and cultural heritage worth protecting, said a representative of the Shaoxing bureau of economy and information technology.
In early 2020, Shaoxing initiated the legislation work and passed the regulations before rounds of discussions at various meetings.
The regulations specify the definition of Shaoxing yellow rice wine, the intellectual protection of the wine, the standards of the brewing process, and the wine quality.
Shaoxing yellow rice wine is often used as the Chinese equivalent to the ubiquitous cooking sherry. It was first brewed over 2,500 years ago, and its brewing technique was listed as a State-level intangible cultural heritage item in 2006.
