The Mausoleum of Yu the Great was built to commemorate the hero of prehistoric times, whose most remarkable accomplishment was taming the waters. He was also an excellent political leader who established the Xia Dynasty (c. 21st century-16th century BC), the first dynasty in Chinese history to follow the hereditary system.
The mausoleum is one of the most important scenic and historic sites in the Kuaiji Mountain scenic area in Shaoxing in East China's Zhejiang province, and is a State-level cultural relic protection unit.
The existing temple was at first built in 545 during Southern Dynasty (420-589) and has been repaired and rebuilt through the ages, but most existing structures were built in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
The mausoleum is a rare large ancient architectural complex in Jiangnan, the area on south banks of the Yangtze River. The complex is placed in a position of harmony with the rising and falling mountain slopes.
