Donghu Lake scenic area, which is six kilometers east of Shaoxing, is one of the three most famous lakes in Zhejiang province. Although it is quite small, its delicacy and elegance rank it among the best attractions in Shaoxing.
The Japanese tourism agency, Japan Travel Bureau Foundation, once conducted a survey among Japanese tourists who had visited West Lake in Hangzhou and Donghu Lake in Shaoxing, and found they were more impressed by Donghu Lake than the far more famous West Lake, indicating that it is not only Shaoxing people who love Donghu Lake.
The lake is hemmed in by a hill formed of bluestone, a kind of material widely used in building houses, bridges and roads. Stoneworkers had quarried stones from this hill since the Western and Eastern Han Dynasties (206 BC-AD 220). In later times the hill hollowed out, leaving only steep cliffs and a deep pool.
The lake was then decorated with bridges and pavilions, and many people enjoy gliding silently along the cliffs in small boats.
