An exhibition showcasing the magnificent stone carvings of Qingtian county opened on Aug 21 at the Zhejiang Exhibition Hall – located in Hangzhou city, capital of East China's Zhejiang province – and will run to Aug 28.

Qingtian county, administered by the city of Lishui in Zhejiang, is renowned for the craft, which was included in the first selection of national intangible cultural heritage items in 2006.

One hundred pieces created by local stone carving masters in recent years are now on display, making the exhibition one of the largest Qingtian stone carvings-themed exhibitions in recent years.

The exhibits have various themes including flowers and birds, human figures, landscapes, historical events, legends and stories – expressing the powerful insights and visions of their creators.

According to historical records, Qingtian stone carving originated in the Six Dynasties (220-589) period. In its long history of development, the craft has developed unique skills and styles.

Today, Qingtian stone carving artists not only preserve their traditional skills, but also keep replenishing the creative content, enabling the stone carving industry to remain prosperous in Qingtian.
