Nowadays Wu Shaohua, head of a puppet troupe in the Jingning She autonomous county – administered by Lishui city in East China's Zhejiang province – has been hard at it rehearsing a newly adapted puppet show called the Red Army Soldier Zhang Senju. 

After he studied the spirit of the sixth plenary session of the 19th CPC Central Committee, he thought  about how to use the puppet show to share its spirit with more people. After a number of drafts, revisions and polishing, a new story has emerged.

Adapting a play is not only a matter of changing a script, but also involves the stage, props, costumes, characters, facial makeup and many other details, said Wu.

After several days and repeated rehearsals, Wu finally took his puppets onto the stage.

"It was a great performance. We had fun watching and learning," said villager Li Kaishou. He said the rendition not only reminded him of the past, but also inspired him about life in the present.

Wu said that he will continue to improve the form and content of the show and send out its message to more local schools, nursing homes and other places through his puppet show.
