Quzhou makes progress in improving quality of life of its residents
The Quzhou municipal government held a news conference on Dec 18 to highlight the city's achievements in enhancing public welfare during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–25) period.
Quzhou has made significant strides in six key areas: education, elderly and child care, employment and social security, healthcare, public activities, and basic medical insurance.
In education, Quzhou's modernization index rose from 10th to 4th in the province, marking the fastest progress among cities. The proportion of children enrolled in public kindergartens surged from 30.3 percent to 85.04 percent. The city established 121 modern schools and added 64,000 student places, achieving a 98 percent standardization rate across urban and rural schools.
Innovative elderly care services have been carried out, with 1,085 senior dining facilities established. Child welfare institutions expanded to 436, covering both urban and rural areas. Housing improvements were carried out for 1,094 disadvantaged families to address issues like aging electrical systems, and smart security devices were installed in 9,011 single elderly households.
Employment initiatives included a comprehensive labor market system covering rural areas, creating over 25,000 urban jobs annually. Industrial workers with at least six months of social insurance and three-year contracts received a housing voucher of 100,000 yuan ($14,202). Social security expanded, with pension coverage exceeding 1.89 million.
Four Provinces Border Center Hospital (Quzhou People's Hospital) has started operations, and mobile medical services are now available in remote areas.
Quzhou established 807 sports venues and hosted major sporting events including the Asian Weightlifting Championships. Several concerts were also held, enriching the city's cultural offerings for residents.
The city maintained a 99 percent enrollment rate in basic medical insurance and introduced convenient healthcare payment models.
