New year mountain climbing event kicks off in Jiangshan

The main event of the 2025 National New Year Climbing and Fitness Conference took place on Jan 1 at Jianglang Mountain in Jiangshan, a county-level city in Quzhou, East China's Zhejiang province.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the national event and the 10th year it has been hosted in Jiangshan. The event was held simultaneously in over 400 locations across 31 provinces and cities in China, engaging nearly 1 million people nationwide.

In Jiangshan, Olympic champions Wang Shun and Huang Yaqiong, along with world champions Wang Di and Deng Lijuan, joined nearly 10,000 participants in climbing to welcome 2025. Their big smiles showed their hopes for a prosperous new year, believing the climb would bring them good fortune.

"According to professional assessments, the National New Year Climbing and Fitness Conference in Jiangshan has generated an estimated 600 million yuan ($82.20 million) in direct economic benefits over the past decade," said Zhou Xuejun, director of the sports bureau of Jiangshan.

Adding to the excitement, a high-altitude slackline challenge captivated fitness enthusiasts. Known as "ballet on a rope", athletes performed walking, jumping, and flipping maneuvers on the slackline.

Besides the climb, nearly 100 fitness activities were unveiled, including line dancing, lion and dragon dances, and skateboarding, which encourages more people to be active and be healthy.
