Monimopetalum chinense, a rare and endangered plant unique to China, was recently found in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province.

The plant is rated as endangered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and is a second-class protected plant by China.

Gao Haojie from the Zhoushan Academy of Forestry Sciences believes that the plant's seeds were brought by birds to Zhoushan. He noted that the discovery of this rare plant proves that the city has a good natural environment.

Zhoushan is home to one first-class national protected plant and 19 second-class national protected plants.

As an islands city, the city is also home to nearly 1,200 species of marine life, including 237 species of phytoplankton and 227 species of nekton, according to the latest research on marine life.
