Construction on 537 major projects commences in Zhejiang

Construction on 537 major projects worth a total of 886.4 billion yuan ($127.78 billion) commenced in Zhejiang province on March 3. The province plans to invest 147.3 billion yuan in the projects this year, amounting to a record 1.65 billion yuan per project on average.

There are 291 high-tech projects worth a total of 540.6 billion yuan, 223 environmental protection, urban improvement and water conservancy projects worth 291.6 billion yuan, and 23 transportation projects worth 54.2 billion yuan, accounting for 61 percent, 32.9 percent, and 6.1 percent of the total, respectively. 

The projects will create around 600,000 new jobs and generate and estimated annual tax revenue of 65 billion yuan when completed.

In addition, 280 kilometers of urban expressways and railways as well as 260 kilometers of embankments will be built. New houses will be built to accommodate 125,000 households. Around 6,000 beds for hospitals and nursing homes and 1,100 classrooms for kindergartens, elementary and middle schools will be built.

Yuan Jiajun, governor of the province, addressed the commencement ceremony, urging all departments to support the construction of the projects.

One project, being carried out by Litian Wanshi New Energy Co at the Jiashan Economic and Development Zone in Jiashan county, Jiaxing, is expected to produce 20 GWh lithium-ion batteries per year and generate an annual output of 18 billion yuan.

"We thought the construction would be delayed until the second half of the year due to the outbreak," said Li Zhengbin, general manager of the company. "The government helped a lot to ensure the start of construction."
