Chinese judicial authorities stepped up efforts to maintain social stability and national security over the past five years.

From 2018 to 2022, 8.27 million suspects were prosecuted for alleged crimes and more than 7.76 million were sentenced, according to work reports unveiled by the Supreme People's Procuratorate and the Supreme People's Court on Tuesday.

Both reports were submitted to the ongoing first session of the 14th National People's Congress, China's top legislature, for review on Tuesday afternoon.

During the period, 265,000 people were charged with organized crime, 261,000 of whom were punished.

In addition, 274,000 people were sentenced for serious violent offenses in the past five years, and the number of suspects charged with the crimes of intentional homicide, arson, explosion, kidnapping, robbery or theft in 2022 was the lowest in nearly two decades.

Prosecutors and judges nationwide also gave tough sentences to those committing the crimes of infiltration, subversion, violence, terrorism, ethnic separatism and religious extremism to firmly safeguard the security of State power, institutions and ideology.
