The city of Xi'an is the cradle of Chinese civilization and the starting point of the Silk Road.
It is one of the four civilized ancient capitals in the world and the earliest to open up to the rest of the world, and the first city in the history of human civilization to reach one million in population.
Xi'an is the largest central city in the Chinese section of the New Eurasia Continental Railway Bridge, and the bridgehead of China’s Western Development Program.
It is an important base for China’s scientific research, higher education, national defense related industry and hi-tech industries.
The city is a renowned international tourist destination. Most notable places such as the Terracotta Warriors and Horses, the City Wall, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, the Shaanxi History Museum and Huashan Mountain attract nearly 247 million domestic and foreign tourists each year.

Important international metropolis planned by state government
In the Guanzhong-Tianshui Economic Zone Development Plan, promulgated by the State Council in 2009, Xi'an was identified as the third "international metropolis" after Beijing and Shanghai.
By 2020, the urban population of Xi'an is expected to be more than 10 million, and the main urban area is expected to encompass 800 square kilometers. Xi'an will be built into China's premiere R&D center, regional trade logistics and exhibition center, regional financial center, world-class tourist destination, hi-tech industries base, and advanced manufacturing base.
