A conference on climate change and carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) was held on Oct 10 in Xi’an in Shaanxi province, Northwest China.
Jointly sponsored by Northwest University, the National Center for Strategic Research and International Cooperation on Climate Change, and the Changqing Oilfield Branch of PetroChina Co., Ltd., the meeting focused on technical solutions for the rapid and significant reduction of carbon emissions from coal-fired power generation and the coal chemical industry.
Guo Lihong, president of Northwest University, presides over the meeting.
Wang Yajie, secretary of the Party committee of Northwest University, said that climate change is a common challenge for the sustainable development of mankind. To actively respond to climate change is not only the internal requirement for China to realize its own sustainable development, but also China's major responsibility to promote the construction of a global community with a shared future.
Wang Yajie, secretary of the Party committee of Northwest University, makes a speech at the conference.
“As a comprehensive university with 118 years of profound information, Northwest University is duty bound to protect the environment and promote scientific and technological innovation,” the Party secretary said.
Ding Hui, director of the department of climate change, Ministry of Ecology and Environment, said that the high degree of importance attached to the work on climate change demonstrated the sense of responsibility that comes with China's great power, and also put forward more explicit requirements for the country's high-quality development and the construction of an ecological civilization.
“The essence of global climate change is the excessive use of fossil energy. Carbon dioxide capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is an internationally-recognized technological solution that can rapidly and significantly reduce carbon emissions from coal-fired power generation and the coal chemical industry,” Ding said.
Ding stressed that vigorously promoting CCUS technology and further building the landing operation of integrated projects will be a very important way for China to realize its vision of carbon neutrality.
At the conference, professors and experts from China, Canada and Japan gave technological reports on CCUS and CCUs facilities science, and the Technology Committee of Ordos Basin was established for CCUS research and development.
CCUS experts from China and foreign countries attend the meeting.
According to Guo, Northwest University, headquartered in Xi’an, has decades of profound research accumulation and fruitful achievements in the fields of carbon dioxide capture and utilization technology.
Through this meeting, Guo said, Northwest University will help contribute more wisdom to better serve the national strategy of environmental protection, jointly promote the development of carbon capture, utilization and storage technology in China, promote green and sustainable development, and enhance the overall development of China. The global community should make more contributions to building a prosperous, clean and beautiful world.
