A project to upgrade the Es-Salam research reactor at Birine Nuclear Research Centre in Algeria, which was undertaken by China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), passed acceptance tests organized by the Atomic Energy Commission of Algeria, on March 7.
As the largest nuclear facility in Algeria, the Es-Salam research reactor is a perfect example of the strong cooperation between the two countries in the development of nuclear power for peaceful purposes, and also of their friendly relations.
The completion of the project demonstrates China’s strength in the nuclear technology field and promotes China’s image as a responsible nuclear power, as well as paving the way for more nuclear projects between the two countries.
The Es-Salam research reactor, designed by CNNC, is the only multi-purpose heavy water reactor in Algeria. It is mainly used to conduct basic scientific research and produce medical isotopes, as well as for other civil purposes.
The upgrades are designed to modernize equipment, systems and components at the reactor to extend its operational life.
