Luo Zhaohui, chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), held a video meeting with the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Achim Steiner on Oct 8. They signed a memorandum of understanding of cooperation under the Global Development Initiative (GDI) on behalf of respective agencies.
Noting that the UNDP is a major cooperation partner of China, Luo said that the signing of the MOU signified the full support and commitment of another major UN agency to the China-proposed initiative. It charted the direction for future bilateral cooperation, and also released a positive signal of deepening multilateral cooperation and jointly promoting sustainable development after the UN’s Summit of the Future, he said, calling for solid follow-up implementation work.
The CIDCA attaches great importance to the joint hosting of the 2024 National Evaluation Capacities Conference with the UNDP, which is the latest measure for implementing the newly signed MOU, Luo added, expressing full confidence in the success of the event.
Steiner acknowledged China's major role in promoting global development cooperation, especially South-South cooperation and trilateral cooperation, where China is a close cooperation partner of the UNDP. The UNDP is ready to use the signing of the MOU as an opportunity to further elevate the bilateral partnership, and jointly implement the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and the GDI to help all developing countries achieve common development, he noted.
Vice-Chairman of the CIDCA Zhao Fengtao, directors-general of the CIDCA's Department of International Cooperation Li Ming and Department of Supervision and Evaluation Tian Lin, as well as the UNDP Resident Representative in China Beate Trankmann also attended the meeting.
