Chinese bamboo skills weave better life for Ecuadorian people

CIDCA| Updated: 2024-02-01

Peso, an Ecuadorian craftsman of bamboo and rattan weaving, shared his experience of learning the technique through training sessions sponsored by the Chinese government in 2019 in a program aired on China Central Television on Jan 20.

As a beneficiary of China's training programs, Peso has led local people to develop the industry and help them move towards a better life with the bamboo and rattan weaving techniques and experience in industrial development he learned from the Chinese teachers.

To support Ecuador's national bamboo development strategy (2018-22) proposed by then Ecuadorian president Lenin Moreno at the Global Bamboo and Rattan Congress in 2018, the Chinese government held three training programs for the Ecuadorian side in 2019.

The programs centered on bamboo processing techniques, the bamboo industry's sustainable growth, and the value enhancement of the industry.

The friendship between China and Ecuador has been further boosted through these programs, which have not only allowed sustainable bamboo and rattan skills to bloom in Ecuador, bringing considerable income to locals, but also improved the cultivation and management of bamboo resources.

In addition, they have helped upgrade the design and quality of bamboo products, deepened cooperation between China and Ecuador in the sector, and bolstered the green development of Ecuador's bamboo industry.

China has widely promoted traditional Chinese bamboo culture, shared its technology and weaving skills with the rest of the world, promoted international cultural exchanges, and contributed a green plan to global sustainable development by organizing various cooperation projects.

The TV program, which was co-produced by China Media Group and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China and with the participation of the International Center for Bamboo and Rattan, featured the exchange and friendship between Chinese and foreign craftsmen against the background of the Belt and Road Initiative.
