Celebrating 100th anniversary of CPC | Chinese medical assistance program helps Gambian patients regain eyesight

CIDCA| Updated: 2022-02-21

The implementation of the China-funded Brightness Action initiative has brought hope to many Gambian cataract patients over the past years.

A Chinese medical assistance team carried out operations for 206 cataract patients in a week after they arrived in Gambia in January 2019, earning great recognition and praise from local people.

Osmium Nakiea is a recipient of the medical assistance. He recalled that he could not earn enough money to support his family because of his cataracts.

He had lost his eyesight for 15 months before seeking medical intervention from Chinese medical experts in 2019. An operation quickly helped him regain his eyesight.

In a letter to Chinese medical experts, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to them.

Local people often greet the experts warmly when they see them on the streets.

China and Gambia have consistently deepened and strengthened their medical and health cooperation and achieved goods results since the two countries resumed diplomatic relations in March 2016.

So far, China has carried out four medical assistance programs in Gambia, saving the lives of over 800 people in critical condition and performing over 1,000 operations.
