Daxing district speeds up supporting measures for new airport

Updated: 2019-07-01

With the main project and various supporting projects of Beijing's Daxing International Airport having completed construction on June 30, Daxing district is speeding up ancillary work in an all-round way to ensure a smooth opening of China's largest comprehensive transportation hub to air traffic.

After more than three years of construction, the airport is complete and will officially begin operations on September 30, 2019.

To ensure the airport’s smooth and timely operation, Daxing has been putting efforts into local villager relocation and resettlement, ecological environment improvement, transportation and employment.

The townships of Yufa and Lixian are located at the southernmost tip of Daxing, 40 kilometers from central Beijing. The local villagers were mainly engaged in farming five years ago, but they were relocated to begin their new life because of the Beijing Daxing International Airport.

In September 2018, Daxing fulfilled its commitment to the villagers, completing the resettlement work on time with high quality and enabling the villagers to move to new homes.

Daxing has continued to improve the ecological environment, promote afforestation, and expand the region’s green space in recent years. At present, the district has completed afforestation of 14,000 mu (933 hectares), and planted more than 480,000 trees and shrubs.

Daxing will focus on building five green corridors and improve the interconnected green ecological corridor system this year to create a green ecological environment around the airport, said a person in charge of the district's landscape bureau.

Chen Zongguang, deputy director of the planting center of Daxing district, said "We will plant landscape fields around the Beijing Daxing International Airport and on both sides of the main line of transportation, making an ecological pattern in which landscape agriculture and urban and rural environment s are integrated and complement each other.”

Currently, the forest area of Daxing is 30,573 hectares, with a forest coverage rate and urban green coverage rate of 29.5 percent and 45.6 percent, respectively.

Comprehensive transportation network

One issue concerning many people is how to get to the airport. Among all the transportation offerings, the new subway line to the airport is particularly important. The first phase of the new airport line began trial operation on June 15, and will open concurrently with the airport at the end of September this year.

The first phase of the new airport line is 41.4 kilometers long, and the length of the line in Daxing district is about 33 kilometers. It now has Caoqiao station, Daxing Xincheng station and North Terminal station and takes only 19 minutes between Caoqiao and Daxing airport at its highest speed of 160 km/h.

In addition, a 27km expressway will help meet the needs of passengers entering and leaving Beijing. The Beijing-Xiong’an Railway, which is expected to be put into operation in September, will have Huangcun station and New Airport station in Daxing district.

At the same time, for land public transportation, there will be six airport bus routes within Beijing and seven inter-provincial routes connecting the airport to the cities and regions of Baoding, Dacheng, Langfang, Sanhe, Shijiazhuang, Tangshan and Tianjin to meet the round-trip demands of passengers from Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei province.

New opportunities for people and enterprises

A cold-chain fresh-cut vegetable processing company in Daxing district is looking at opportunity brought by the new airport. The company, with an annual processing capacity of 10,000 tons of vegetables, has its own vegetable planting base, processing rooms, and well-established transportation. With the opening of the new airport, the company is contacting airlines seeking cooperation for providing them with green and healthy food.

Daxing is making efforts to help the airport’s resettlement of residences access basic supporting facilities, including vegetable shops, convenience stores, and even breakfast restaurants. In September, a nursing home and a 24-hour library will be available to local residents.

In addition, local people will find new work opportunities at the airport and in the airport economic zone. By the end of June, 1,000 local residents in Daxing were working for the new airport. So far, over 70 companies and merchants in the airport have created more than 3,000 jobs.

The Daxing’s human resources and social security bureau said it will further connect aviation enterprises and increase training in the district.

The Daxing District Development and Reform Commission has offered airlines, logistics companies, and other settled enterprises customized service suggestions for solving problems concerning aviation industry policies, including route demands, industrial land, education and training resources.
