Xinwu district sees surge in consumption during May Day holiday

Xinwu district in Wuxi, East China's Jiangsu province experienced a surge in consumption during this year's May Day holiday from April 29 to May 3.

The supply of vegetables, fruits, grain and oil remained stable and sufficient throughout the holiday. A chain supermarket in Xinwu, RT-Mart, received an average of 6,000 customers per day and saw an 8 percent increase in sales compared to last year.

The Xinwu bureau of commerce reported a 16.4 percent increase in sales in several sample enterprises including department stores and catering and tourism services providers.

Major shopping centers in the district also saw a boom in consumption. For example, Bailian Outlets Plaza achieved impressive sales of 42 million yuan ($6.07 million) and received over 75,000 customers. Xinwu Wanda Plaza had an average of 30,000 customers a day and average daily sales of 2.1 million yuan, representing an increase of more than 10 percent over the same period last year. Powerlong Plaza received over 200,000 customers and its sales exceeded 10 million yuan.

In the catering and tourism sector, Xindi Holiday Plaza, which features restaurants offering cuisines of different countries, saw a significant increase in footfall of over 20 percent and a 20 percent increase in sales compared to last year. Meili Ancient Town saw a record number of visitors, with the highest daily visitors surpassing 330,000.

Xinwu district also distributed vouchers worth 4 million yuan to car buyers on May 1. During the holiday, 1,157 cars valued at 204 million yuan were sold.
