The M8 project – a production center for 8-inch non-storage wafers – started operating on March 16. The center was jointly funded and developed by Haichen Semiconductor (Wuxi) Co Ltd and Hynix Semiconductor Wuxi Ltd.
Receiving a total of $1.4 billion in investment, the center will manufacture and sell CISs (CMOS Image Sensors), DDIs (Display Driver Integrated Circuits), PMICs (Power Management ICs), and Nand Flashes. It also involves the development of sub-contracted manufacturing for algorithm and mixed-signal chips. The center is expected to produce 115,000 8-inch wafers per month, much more than the 50,000 per month produced by most similar firms.
The M8 project is intended to improve the currently limited 8-inch wafer production capacity of China, strengthen Wuxi's position as a hub for China's micro-electronics industry, and develop WND into a comprehensive hub for the global semiconductor industry.
