Wuxi National Hi-tech District's progress in becoming a technology innovation hub gained support from a State-owned institute on Dec 20.

Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics, part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, signed an agreement to build a photoelectric sensing technology institute in WND, with the aim of researching more applications in high-end equipment manufacturing and taking advantage of the quality industrial development there.

The institute has made important contributions to the country's major scientific and technological advances by leading in the field of infrared photoelectricity, a vital technology used for both military and civilian purposes.

Ding Lei, head of the institute, said that it marks the first step for the institute to cooperate with other organizations. The new institute is expected to make more breakthroughs in new technology and promote the development of technology innovation in Wuxi.

Wuxi Mayor Huang Qin said the government will fully support the project, saying it will be of positive significance for upgrading Wuxi's technological innovation capability and helping to implement the national strategy for the integration of the Yangtze River Delta region.

The new institute is supposed to engage in research and development, verification and industrialization of short-wave infrared technology and related optoelectronic materials, oriented to the internet of things, smart city construction, intelligent manufacturing and other fields.
