Applications for the 2019 Zhongguancun 5G Application Innovation Competition will be opened on July 17, according to the competition’s press conference held in Beijing recently.

The contest, with a theme of "5G innovative application boosting digital economy", aims to recruit 5G innovative application projects that have high technical standards and floor-to-ceiling solutions from around the world, according to Liu Hang, deputy inspector of the Administrative Committee of Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park.

All the applications should be focused on five typical scenarios of 5G self-driving, health care, industrial internet, smart cities and ultra HD video applications.

The competition comprises preliminary and final rounds. The preliminary contest will fall on Sept 20 and the final will be held on Oct 12, and all the awarded projects will be displayed at a media conference to be held on October 18.

One first prize, two second prizes, three third prizes and several excellent prizes will be awarded.

Projects finishing among the top six and that have been applied in the infrastructure projects involving the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Beijing's sub-center in Tongzhou district and new airport in Daxing district and major technologies related to capital’s economic and social development will get merit-based support in accordance with the relevant fund management methods of the Zhongguancun Demonstration Zone.

All the awarded projects will be displayed in the Zhongguancun Exhibition Center and will participate in various exhibitions organized by Zhongguancun for free.

The selection will be conducted at each test site by participating enterprises or teams. In addition to Zhongguancun Cuihu Laboratory, the test sites cover all kinds of environments, including an ultra HD video production center and a 5G self-driving demonstration area.

Zhang Guanglian, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, said that institutes and enterprises committed to 5G research are welcomed to take part in the competition, which is meant to deeply explore and incubate a number of cutting-edge innovative and dynamic technology projects.

The competition is co-hosted by the Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park and the local government.
