Beihang University announced the launch of the Holistic Integrative Medicine and Engineering Alliance at its Medicine and Engineering Integration Summit on Jan 29.

Advocated by Fan Daiming, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the alliance aims to help the nation implement its health care strategy, innovate new ways of integrating medicine and engineering, and explore new modes of public health.

Fan Daiming said that the alliance will develop an innovative cooperation platform integrating government, industry, education, research institutes and medicine to promote the transformation and application of cutting-edge engineering technologies in solving medical-related issues.

Fan Yubo, head of the School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering of Beihang University, said, "Beihang will cooperate with the country’s leading medical companies and research institutes on clinic demands, technology research and development, company applications and industrial transformation."

China's patent numbers have leapt to the second place in the world, in both domestic and international patents. However, the market transformation rate of invention patents in China is only 4.6 percent, which is far lower than the global average of 20 percent.

The alliance will play a significant role in promoting the application of Chinese medical patents and in transforming the invention patents of medical devices.

More than 400 medical experts from the country's renowned hospitals, universities, research academies and investment institutes gathered for the launch of the alliance, discussing innovation trends in medicine and health care.
