Yunnan University (YNU) hosted a Peking Opera concert for retirees on Sept 16 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.

More than 50 senior citizens from YNU, Kunming University of Science and Technology, and Yunnan Nationalities University participated in the event.

Some of the participants retired from their positions a long time ago, and some are as old as 90.

Peking opera, or Beijing opera, is a dominant form of Chinese opera. It combines music, vocals, miming, dancing, and acrobatics. It originated in Beijing in the mid-Qing dynasty (1636–1912) and had become a fully developed art form by the mid-19th century. It was extremely popular in the Qing court and has come to be regarded as a Chinese cultural treasure.
