Yunnan University (YNU) hosted an activity on Chinese Cultural and Natural Heritage Day on June 9.

The activity was sponsored by the Yunnan Department of Culture and Tourism with the aim of getting more college teachers and students, as well as society at large, to get involved in the preservation of intangible cultural heritage.

At the opening ceremony, Zhzhang Xing, Party secretary of YNU’s School of Art and Design, read a congratulatory letter. Next, Li Yan, dean of YNU’s Institute for Cultural Development, and Wang Tiejun, president of the Kunming Association of Cultural Innovation, delivered speeches. 

Following the opening ceremony, 10 representatives from institutes, firms, universities, and associations shared their insights into the preservation of intangible cultural heritage. 

That afternoon, a number of skilled craftsman were invited to the YNU campus to showcase Chinese intangible cultural heritage items, such as bamboo weavings, paper cuttings, microscopic carvings, and embroideries. Many teachers and students admired the work of these masters.

In 2015, Chinese Cultural and Natural Heritage Day was designated by the State Council as the second Saturday of June every year.
