The 2018 Workshop on Myanmar Situations and China-Myanmar Relations was held by the Institute for Myanmar Studies and the Center for Neighboring Diplomacy of Yunnan University (YNU), on Dec 20.

Nearly 200 experts, scholars and officials from YNU, Peking University, Tsinghua University, China Foreign Affairs University, Ji’nan University, and Fudan University, as well as other institutes, government departments and companies attended the event.

At the opening ceremony of the workshop, four books about conditions inside Myanmar, China-Myanmar relations and investment in Myanmar, all of which were compiled by YNU Institute for Myanmar Studies and Center for Neighboring Diplomacy, were launched.

Following the ceremony, experts in Myanmar studies shared their findings on the latest information about Myanmar’s politics, economy, society, foreign policies, China-Myanmar relations, and the construction of the China-Myanmar Economy Corridor.

Guan Mu, a former Chinese ambassador to Myanmar and Thailand, gave his own views on the experts’ opinions.

YNU has hosted the annual Myanmar workshop since 2011. And the workshop has evolved over the years to become a major platform for scholars from various institutes and universities to share their research findings and offer academic support to government and firms.

In recent years, YNU has worked hard to develop its Institute for Myanmar Studies and Center for Neighboring Diplomacy, with the aim of building the two think tanks into national research bases.

The Institute for Myanmar Studies of YNU is the world’s second physical Myanmar studies institute besides the Myanmar research institute at Northern Illinois University. The Center for Neighboring Diplomacy of YNU, founded in 2015, is an institute specializing in the research of diplomacy with other countries and cross-nation studies.
