The base for making traditional Chinese purple potteries at Yunnan University (YNU) was recently recognized by the Ministry of Education as one of the first 55 exemplary bases in universities across the country for passing down traditional Chinese culture.
The purple potteries-making base at YNU is the only one included on the list among Yunnan universities, marking another achievement for the university in promoting traditional Chinese culture following its entry onto the program for developing Chinese intangible cultural heritage conducted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.
YNU is now the main organization that researches methods to preserve and develop the traditional skills for making Yuxi-style blue-and-white porcelain (Yuxi is a city in Yunnan province). It has hosted various projects on intangible cultural heritage preservation.
In 2017, YNU signed a strategic cooperation deal with Yunnan cultural department to jointly establish two bases to study and develop Yunnan’s intangible cultural heritage.
Moving forward, YNU plans to build the YNU purple pottery base into a demonstration base for promoting traditional Chinese culture –– able to extend its influence throughout Asia.
