Professor He Baogang, director of the department of public policies and global affairs at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), was invited to deliver lecture on issues relating to Myanmar political transformation at the Institute for Myanmar Studies at Yunnan University (YNU), on Nov 30.
In recent years, Professor He has conducted several investigations on Myanmar public’s consciousness of constitutionalism and concepts of federation by adopting the method of deliberate polling.
He said that the Myanmar public was willing to eliminate the divergences and build a consensus in ethnical and religious issues while the political elites harbored divergent opinions.
Professor He went on to say that the success of Myanmar’s political transformation hinges on whether the federal system was implemented in Myanmar.
Myanmar has the public opinion foundation to implement the federal system, but the high-level figures in the country are finding it difficult to reach a consensus on this issue, He said.
After the lecture, He held a discussion with the teachers and students at YNU’s Institute for Myanmar Studies.
