A group of representatives from top Canadian universities visited Yunnan University (YNU) to negotiate a partnership, on Nov 15.

The activity was organized by Yunnan Education Department and the Canadian consulate-general in Chongqing.

Representatives in charge of international exchanges and graduate admissions from Queen’s University, the University of Saskatchewan, Laurentian University, the University of Windsor, Memorial University of Newfoundland, University de Montreal, Laval University and the University of Quebec in Montreal, held a round table meeting with YNU representatives in attendance.

Yang Lin, Party secretary of YNU, met with the delegation, and briefed them on the current state of affairs at YNU and its collaboration with Canadian universities. He expressed his hopes for deeper cooperation with Canadian universities in the future.

On behalf of the Canadian government, Sima Tian, deputy consul-general of Canada’s consulate-general in Chongqing, extended his congratulations on YNU’s participation in the Double First-rate Program. He said that Canada’s consulate-general in Chongqing would do its utmost to promote exchanges and cooperation between top Canadian universities and YNU.

Liao Zhong, senior education attaché, briefed attendees on the scholarship programs that the Canadian government and China Scholarship Council would offer to Chinese students studying in Canada.

In his address, he said that Canadian universities recruited nearly 1,200 doctoral students who had won scholarships from the China Scholarship Council, ranking Canada third among all countries in the world in terms of the number, after only the United States and United Kingdom.

Following the round table meeting, the Canadian delegation held an advisory meeting where they provided consultations for students and teachers interested in studying in Canada.

Following two days of negotiations, YNU reached a consensus with the Canadian delegation on joint research and the training of graduate students. YNU is now expected to further expand the channels and forms of cooperation with Canadian universities.
