Xu Zongben, academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), who has his own academician work station at Yunnan University (YNU), won the 2018 Tan Kah Kee Science Award, at a recent conference involving academicians from CAS and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), on May 30.

In recognition of his highly significant research project titled Sparse Radar Imaging Based on L (1/2) Regularization Theory, Xu shared the title of the 2018 Tan Kah Kee Science Award with Wu Yirong, also an academician at CAS.

Xu is an expert in intelligent information processing. He currently serves as president of Xi’an International Academy of Mathematics and Mathematical Technology, and as director of the National Engineering Laboratory of Big Data Analytics.

He was also awarded the National Award for Science of China in 2007, and the National Award for Scientific and Technological advancement in 2011; he was a winner of CSIAM Su Buchin Applied Mathematics Prize in 2008, and delivered a 45-minute lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians held at Hyderabad in 2010.

The Tan Kah Kee Science Award was named after Tan Kah Kee, a Chinese national living overseas who was known for his patriotism. The award covers six different fields and is given every two years. Each winner of the award receives a cash prize of 1,000,000 yuan ($156,128).
