Donglu high-academic forum was held at Yunnan University (YNU) on March 24.
Sheng Bin, dean of the School of Economics at Nankai University and member of the Cheung Kong Scholars program and State Council Degree Committee, was invited to deliver a keynote speech on the current tensions over trade between the United States and China.
During his speech he outlined the tough stance on trade US President Donald Trump has taken toward China since coming to power.
He then gave specific analysis to the Section 301 investigation which took place after Trump signed a memorandum to impose additional tariffs on imports from China.
The trading dispute, Sheng argued, would have a negative impact on both sides.
However, the professor played down the possibility of an immediate trade war, and highlighted the various opportunities for both sides to engage in dialogue.
China, Sheng said, should continue to deepen Reform and Opening Up at home while negotiating with the US. But, at the same time, the country should also prepare for the worst.
