A group of legal experts from South Asian countries have recently completed their intensive study of Chinese law, after attending the second China-South Asia legal training program initiated by Yunnan University (YNU).

The 20-day program was part of an effort made by YNU to boost the development of the Belt and Road Initiative following the first program held last year.

All 26 attendees of the program were from countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Having taken their professional background into consideration, YNU invited scholars and experts from universities and law firms to help give them a command of the Chinese legal system, including economic law, criminal law, procedural law, as well as civil and commercial law.

During the training program, attendees were also offered opportunities to visit the Yunnan Lawyers Association, Yunnan Higher People's Court and Kunming Intermediate People's Procuratorate for further research.

Students of the program appeared to enjoy the course, with many saying that the combination of theoretical learning and on-site investigation had deepened their understanding toward the current situation of Chinese legal development and relations between China and countries in South Asia.

They also said that the program helped further boost their confidence in the prospects of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Zhang Mingqi, vice-chairman of the China Law Society; Lin Wenxun, president of YNU, and Zhao Zuying, vice-chairman of Yunnan Lawyers Association, attended the opening ceremony of the training program.

Supported by the China Law Society, the program was held by YNU in partnership with the China-South Asia Legal Training Base and China-South Asia Legal Research Center.
