Xia Jun, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS), delivered a lecture on the development and prospects of ecological hydrology, at Yunnan University (YNU), on Dec 22.
Zhang Li, vice-president of Yunnan University, presided over the lecture, which saw more than 300 faculty members and students in attendance.
Professor Xia elaborated on ecological hydrology from three aspects –– what the discipline aims for, what the discipline focuses on, and the development and prospects of ecological hydrology.
In his lecture, he said that current ecological hydrology mainly focuses on the ecological hydrology of rivers and lakes, vegetation and ecological systems, the relationship between river exploitation and ecology, and urban ecological rehabilitation.
Xia also shared the latest developments in international ecological hydrology. He stressed the importance of interdisciplinary research in ecology and hydrology, and encouraged innovation in theoretical and practical studies of ecological hydrology.
Xia Jun is a member of the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and dean of the Research Institute of Water Security at Wuhan University. He was elected chairman of the International Water Resources Association (IWRA) in 2009.
He has published 183 papers which have been included in the Science Citation Index (SCI), 157 which have been included in the Engineering Index (EI), and 12 monographs. In 2014, he received the IHP-Volker Medal, the highest prize in the field of hydrology, from the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS), UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) –– for his outstanding contribution to hydrology.
