History

Yunnan University's School of Public Administration was established on the basis of the former Department of Politics and Public Administration in July 1999.

Goals

The school aims to become a top-level research and teaching institution in western China through cultivating talents, academic research, cultural inheritance and innovation, and providing social services.

Majors

The school has five undergraduate majors: politics and administration, international politics, public administration, public affairs administration, and philosophy. Politics and Administration and Public Affairs Administration are national first-class featured majors and provincial-level key majors. The school’s provincial-level key majors are politics and public administration. There is one provincial-level public administration teaching experimental demonstration center.

Degree authorization has been granted for three first-level graduate majors: politics, public administration, and philosophy, and for 16 second-level graduate majors: political theories, Chinese and foreign political systems, international politics, ethical politics and public administration, public administration, educational economics and management, social guarantee, social medicine and healthcare administration, public policies, city management, Marxist philosophy, ethics, religious studies, western philosophy, and Chinese philosophy. Degree authorization has also been granted for MPA degrees.

Doctoral degree authorizations exist for the first-level major of politics and the second-level major of public administration. There are five second-level doctoral degrees: political theories, Chinese and foreign political systems, international politics, ethical politics and public administration, and public administration. There is also a postdoctoral research station for the first-level major, politics.

Faculty

There are 74 faculty members, 66 of them full-time. By June 2017, the school was home to 14 professors and two associate professors, including one "Yangtze River Scholar" honored by the Ministry of Education, one national specially supported high-level talent, two national-level famous teachers, one judge for the National Social Science Fund of China, two national Baosteel best teachers award winners, two Yunling scholars, one famous Yunling teacher, three Yunnan provincial famous teachers, three social science experts that made outstanding contributions, and two young leading academic researchers in Yunnan. The school has one national research teaching group in politics and public administration, three provincial university famous teachers’ offices, one provincial-level teaching experiment demonstration center, and two Yunnan provincial academic innovation groups.

Research 

In the last five years the School of Public Administration has hosted two key national social science projects, one major project, one key project of the Ministry of Education, 32 projects using national social science funds, 15 philosophy of social science projects  of the Ministry of Education, and 42 provincial social science projects. The school has won one first prize of the 2015 Ministry of Education philosophy social science achievements (Professor Zhou Ping), one third prize of the 2013 Ministry of Education philosophy social science achievements (Professor Zhou Ping), one special award and one first prize of the 2016 Yunnan provincial teaching achievements, seven first prizes, 18 second prizes, and 33 third prizes of Yunnan provincial philosophy social science achievements.
