Established in 1922, Yunnan University was among the first group of comprehensive universities to be established in China's western border regions. It was selected as one of the most influential universities in the world by Encyclopedia Britannica in 1946.
In 1996, Yunnan University was among the first group of universities included in the 211 Project. It was listed as a key construction university in accordance with the West China Development strategy in 2001. Three years later, in 2004, it was selected as one of the key co-construction universities of the Ministry of Education and Yunnan provincial government.
In 2012, Yunnan University became an implementation university of the National Basic Ability Construction Project of Western and Central China and the Western and Central Universities Comprehensive Strength Promotion Project.

Ⅱ Treatment of introduced talents
1. Individuals who meet the conditions prescribed in the Interim Measures to Introduce Talents of Yunnan University will enjoy treatment according to their corresponding level. If no qualified candidate meets the introduction condition in terms of disciplines such as Thai, Burmese and Vietnamese, the university will negotiate and confirm treatment with the candidate according to the latter's practical situation.
2. Talents who meet the basic requirements prescribed in the Regulations on the Selection and Appointment of the Party and Government Leaders and are competent to fill related management posts, could be appointed as leaders at the college-level after selection and appointment procedures, based on existing conditions.
