Binhai Industrial Park, part of the Weifang National Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone, was built to boost marine industries in Weifang.

Two economic zones – the nation-level Shandong Peninsula blue economic zone and the Yellow River Delta eco-economic zone – overlap the 2 million square meter area of the park, offering support for the growth of marine and ecological industries.

Banking on innovation resources of international education institutions, research facilities, and hi-tech companies, the park aims to build a platform for cooperation in technological research and development to advance the commercialization of research findings and to foster a competitive marine industrial cluster offering business incubating services.

For the development of advanced marine industry, including marine biotechnology and marine equipment manufacturing, the park built incubators and a public technology platform in a 66,700-square-meter area with a total investment of 350 million yuan ($51.7 million). These facilities are well appointed, and offer training, consultation, and marketing services.

As of late, the park has attracted 25 companies to settle there, and signed agreements for strategic cooperation with the Ocean University of China, the Qingdao University of Science & Technology, the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, and the National Oceanographic Center, Qingdao.

A marine laboratory and a laboratory of polymer materials were recently unveiled as the results of collaboration with the Ocean University of China and the Qingdao University of Science and Technology respectively.

The park has also established long-term relationships with 20 experts specializing in marine technologies, including two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Mai Kangsen and Hou Baorong. Mai Kangsen used to be the vice president of Ocean University of China and specializes in mariculture, while Hou Baorong is an expert in marine corrosion and protection.

Academics included in the Taishan Scholarship project, a talent recruiting program of Shandong province, have also started collaboration with research facilities and technology companies located inside the park for development of breeding projects, among others.

Local biotech company Conqueren's immune nutrition resource project is included in Shangdong province’s program aimed at enriching food supply from marine sources.
