It is recorded in Ming Tai Zu Shi Lu that Zhu Yuanzhang the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty reinforced the naval presence by establishing the Hainan Garrison in 1369 (the second year of Hongwu) on the basis of the naval forces of the Yuan Dynasty. "The Hainan Garrison was established, and placed under the command of Sun An, the Assistant commander."
According to Ming Tai Zu Shi Lu, "(In the Xinmao Day of June in the sixteenth year of Hongwu) the Hainan Garrison captured fourteen people including Wuyuan, from Java and other states. Those captives were sent to the state capital, and were pardoned by imperial decree."
