Recently, six students participating in the "2024 Summer Attachment Programme for Hong Kong Law Students in the Mainland" visited the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) in Beijing. During their visit, they engaged in discussions with officials from relevant departments of the MOJ, and toured the Chaoyang District Community Correction Center.
This program is organized by the Department of Justice of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government. While in Beijing, the students will also visit several judicial and government bodies, including the Supreme People's Court, the Supreme People's Procuratorate, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Additionally, they will undertake a three-week internship at the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission and the Beijing Financial Court.
During their visit to the MOJ, the students held discussions with leading officials from the ministry's Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, the Bureau of Rule of Law Research, the First Bureau of Legislation and the Bureau of Lawyers' Work. They engaged in in-depth exchanges on topics such as the MOJ's functions, the role of lawyers, the drafting of laws and regulations, the practice of Hong Kong and Macao lawyers in the mainland, the promotion of the Belt and Road Initiative, and the legal challenges posed by new technologies and applications.
One of the students expressed his appreciation for the internship opportunity and expressed his willingness to tap into his common law practice and bilingual proficiency in Chinese and English so as to sharpen his skills and abilities to become a capable professional ready to contribute to the country's development.
