Judicial administrative authorities of Central China's Hunan province have given constant support to underage children of prisoners and drug addicts through a provincial judicial department volunteer project since 2014.
The project targets minors who have become de facto orphans as both or one of their parents is serving sentences while the other has died, remarried or gone missing.
With the roughly 56 million yuan ($8.21 million) it has raised so far, the project has guaranteed the healthy growth of over 10,000 kids through support for their daily lives, education, personal safety and mental health. As a result, it was named the best volunteer project in Hunan in 2019.
Since the COVID-19 outbreak this spring, judicial bureaus across the province have stepped up their effort to carry out the project. The judicial bureau of Changde city, for example, announced in May that it would offer educational support to 1,200 children of prisoners and drug addicts over the next three years.
